Mariners fire general manager Jack Zduriencik (Yahoo Sports)

The Seattle Mariners fired general manager Jack Zduriencik on Friday after seven disappointing seasons during which the club failed to end its playoff drought. Team President Kevin Mather announced the decision to fire Zduriencik, with assistant general manager Jeff Kingston taking over on an interim basis. Kingston joined the Mariners front office in 2009 after spending seven years as the director of baseball operations with San Diego.

Redskins LB Junior Galette out for season with Achilles tear (Yahoo Sports)

Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden says outside linebacker Junior Galette will miss the entire season after tearing his left Achilles tendon. Galette had missed Washington’s first two exhibition games as he worked his way back from an injury to a chest muscle. Washington signed Galette at the start of training camp after he was released by New Orleans because of off-field issues.

Johnny Manziel out for rest of preseason with elbow injury (Yahoo Sports)

Johnny Manziel’s preseason is over, sacked by a stinging elbow. Browns coach Mike Pettine said Thursday that Manziel, who has made strides in his second year in the NFL after a rough rookie season, will not play in Cleveland’s last two exhibition games because of lingering soreness in his right elbow. Manziel will miss Saturday’s game at Tampa Bay as well as Cleveland’s preseason finale at Chicago on Sept. 3.

Spieth stumbles out of the blocks at Barclays (Yahoo Sports)

Former dunk king Dawkins dies at 58

Darryl Dawkins, the former NBA star whose powerful dunks earned him the nickname “Chocolate Thunder”, has died of a heart attack at the age of 58, his family said. “It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband and father, Darryl Dawkins, who succumbed today to a heart attack,” his family said in a statement issued through the NBA.
