Ole Hansen, Head of Commodity Strategy: As highlighted in our weekly COT update, managed money held a net long of 169k COMEX gold futures contracts on 2 September, valued at $60.6 billion. This accounted for 47% of the total net long across 27 major futures contracts, though still below last September’s 255k contracts worth nearly $68 billion at $2,658/oz. In effect, hedge funds now gain or lose around $600 million for every 1% move in the gold price.
