The Mad Scramble To Cope With War’s Fallout
Gerald Celente:  For businesses, the Iran War’s twin legacies will be higher prices and lingering uncertainty.

Business executives in all sectors are saying “I need to get myself options,” Kevin O’Marah, chief of research at Zero100, which studies supply chains, told The New York Times. That means “additional plant capacity, additional pockets of inventory, alternate routes. But that flexibility costs money and that’s inherently inflationary.”

During the week of 6 July, the International Monetary Fund raised its forecast for inflation this year to 4.7 percent, up significantly from last year’s 4.1-percent pace because the war had raised prices for fuel, food, metals, fertilizers, and other essentials.

That forecast was made during the brief ceasefire that had dropped oil prices back to pre-war levels. Since then, fighting has returned and oil prices have climbed by as much as 18 percent. Brent crude oil, the global pricing benchmark, traded at $88.45 on 20 July, compared to about $72 before the war began.

As the battle resumed, Donald Trump said the U.S. would charge a 20-percent fee on cargos traveling through the Strait of Hormuz. That could double the cost of shipping, analysts told the NYT.

With the strait largely closed, shippers such as Maersk have been rerouting cargo containers overland by rail and truck, adding an average of $1,000 per container to the usual freight rates.

Ocean freight rates are about 85 percent higher now than a year ago, logistics company Rhenus told the NYT.

Shippers have been absorbing much of the extra cost but will not do so indefinitely. If the workaround goes on into the fall, the surcharge will pass through to retailers who will hand it off to consumers or else shrink their profit margins to accommodate it.

Because of the war, exporters no longer feel they can depend on the usual routes and must develop alternatives, major shipping companies’ executives have said.

The cost of insuring shipments will remain at their current “red alert” levels until there has been at least six months of continuous stability, Rhenus CEO Tobias Bartz added. Every time another missile is fired, that six-month clock is reset to zero, he noted.

Kuwait is thinking of rebooting a Saudi pipeline that runs through the Golan Heights along Israel’s northern border with Syria. The pipeline has not been in use since 1991. Saudi Arabia and Turkey are mulling rail connections linking Jordan and Syria. Oman is expanding ports that lie past the Strait of Hormuz’s exit. Iraq is thinking about laying new pipelines.

“This is the new operating environment,” Proxima, a supply chain consultancy, wrote in a report after polling more than 500 CEOs around the world.

“We’re now in a world of not economizing for the most efficient option,” former U.S. energy department official David Goldwyn said in an NYT interview. “We’re in the world of investing for security and resilience and redundancy.”

TREND FORECAST:
There is no end in sight for the Iran War. Israel will not withdraw from Lebanon, and they will keep stealing Palestinian land in Gaza and the West Bank, which violates Iran’s ceasefire demands.

Also, Iran is demanding that the U.S. return the billions of dollars that Washington has stolen from them and that the U.S. pay for the bombing damages they inflicted across Iran…which the U.S. will not do. Therefore, the economic global fallout from the Iran War will worsen as the war escalates.
